There's a new girls' softball coach in the Beallsville dugout this spring.
After 14 seasons of leading the Lady Blue Devils, Deb Street stepped down and Kelly Meade was named as her replacement.
Meade is no stranger to Monroe County as she was a 4-year letterwinner at Beallsville and played in the OVAC All-Star Game.
Pictured are key returnees for the Beallsville softball team. Bottom, from left, are Laikyn Tubaugh, Shania Phillips and Morgan Marley. Top, from left, are Abby Swallow, Dicey Stewart and Laykottaha Taylor.
She went on to pitch at Waynesburg College after high school.
She currently teaches in the Switzerland of Ohio School District and resides in Beallsville with her husband and three children.
"This will be a season of rebuilding," Meade admitted. "With that said, however, we might be young, but we are full of spunk and will not be strangers to winning. We have a great group of returning letterwinners that have really stepped up into the leadership roles."
Half-a-dozen letterwinners are back in the fold, including a trio of 3-year starters in Shania Phillips (C/INF), Lakyn Tubaugh (CF/SS) and Morgan Marley (P/SS).
Tubaugh was an all-district Division IV performer last season while recording several putouts at home with strong throws from centerfield.
Also returning are juniors Dicey Stewart (1B/P) and Laykottaha Taylor (INF/OF); and sophomore Abbey Swallow (2B/P).
The roster is completed by a seven-member freshmen class which includes Elizabeth Rutter (OF), Taylor Shriver (2B/SS), Joy Henthorn (OF), MaKenze Kernik (OF/P), Rebecca Rutter (1B/ OF), Rianna Decker (3B/C) and Sandy Henthorn (OF).
"With seven freshmen out of 13 players, inexperience is definitely going to be one of our weaknesses this season," Meade said.
"On the other hand, we are a team and we really function well when we play as a unit."
Meade is assisted by Jeff Fluharty and Paden Stewart.
Lost to graduation were Madison Stephen, Katey Kinney, Kammie Daugherty, Darby Hossman and Karissa Morgan.
The Blue Devils will compete against the same schedule as last spring and will play in the OVAC Class 1A.
