The Bridgeport Bulldogs' track program is continuing its quest to increase numbers and depth as head coach Donnie Cash begins his third season at the helm.
The nucleus for the Bulldogs is solid with some key point scorers back in the mix, especially on the girls' side.
"We have a good group of girls back," Cash said. "We expect a lot of our girls to have productive seasons. All of them are veterans now."
PICTURED ARE the key returnees for the Bridgeport track teams. Front row, from left, are Skibrea Butler, Randi Barker, Shannon Frey, Bethany Barker, Cheyenne Flowers and Briana Massey. Back row, from left, are Austin McAtee, Austin Kitzmiller, Kyle Lindsay, Tyus Harris, Tim Horn and Lucas Pomeranski.
The Lady Bulldogs do boast a two-time state qualifier in junior speedster Briana Massey. Massey advanced to the Division III state meet in the 200 meter dash. She'll also see time in the 100 meters and on sprint relays.
During the course of the season, Massey decided to give long jump a try and it worked out into a regional trip. She was consistently over thw 16-foot barrier and is looking to improve on the mark and take the next step in the postseason.
Bridgeport should be stable in the hurdles as well. Senior Cheyenne Flowers came on toward the end of last season in the lows and qualified for the regional. She broke into the low 48s and is looking to drop even more time. She'll also run the high hurdles.
Senior Bethany Barker will join her in those events.
Joining Massey in the sprints and on relays will be junior Shannon Frey.
Sophomores Starbrea Butler and Randi Barker, along with freshman Jasmine Rogers will also provide depth in the sprints.
In the throwing events, sophomore Dorothy Johnson and freshman Deja Massey will be the top Lady Bulldogs' entrants.
The Bulldogs' boys numbers are up, but there are some unproven athletes in the mix, but Cash is confident they'll develop as the season moves along.
"We have a few more kids out as distance runners and I am hoping we can put together some solid relay teams," Cash said.
The Bulldogs are led by returning regional qualifier Austin McAtee in the sprints.
Junior Kyle Lindsey is another who can provide depth in sprints along with junior Koty Seevers.
Sophomore sprinting options include: Tyus Harris, Anthony Pierce and Austin Kitzmiller.
Senior Rodrigo Brenna, junior Lucas Pomeranski, junior John Christakis and sophomore Tim Horn make up the distance contingent.
Sophomores Jordan Sewell and Matt Weed will be in the throwing circles, while Lindsey and Seevers will also long jump.
Cash is being assisted once again by Jeff Frey and Ashley Orzolek.
