CADIZ The two individuals accused in the murder of Joseph M. Strothers, a 45-year-old Cadiz man who was found dead in Sally Buffalo Park last Friday, were caught by police after a chase Saturday evening.
Matthew Dowdel, 24, of Hopedale, and Eve Irene Kelley, 33, previously of Wintersville, fled to Daytona Beach, Fla. in their attempt to evade arrest after they were named as suspects in Strothers' death. On Tuesday, a traffic camera read the license plate of Dowdel and Kelley's stolen 2006 Chevy Trailblazer.
Saturday, police from Daytona Beach Shores Public Safety initiated a traffic stop which ended with the suspects fleeing on foot. The foot chase reportedly started at a Walgreen's drugstore at 3004 S. Atlantic Ave. in Daytona Beach Shores. An area resident told a local newspaper that the duo attempted to hide behind a dumpster before taking off in different directions. A police officer pursuing Kelley used a Taser to stop her.
Dowdel and Kelley are being held at the Volusia County Branch Jail without bail as Daytona Beach Shores officials work with Harrison County law enforcement. The extradition process will likely begin Monday. Sheriff Joe Myers said previously that officials have been in contact with U.S. marshals since the stolen vehicle was spotted in Daytona Beach.
Upon booking, Dowdel was charged with resisting an officer without violence, driving with license suspended/revoked, grand theft of a motor vehicle under $100,000 and being a fugitive from justice.
Kelley received all the same charges except for driving with a suspended license.
