THEY SAY "March comes in like a lion and goes out a lamb."
If they mean it's a lamb because it's cold enough to still wear lamb's wool, then yes, the Buds agree with that statement.
And the stretch of dreary days drug into last week, when the Buds found themselves looking for a place to dine. Arguments ensued over who would drive, where we would go, why we didn't want to go here or there in the rain - sigh. Ah, togetherness.
The Buds score a stash of goodies from Northern Belles.
After some debate, the wily Buds spotted an article written by a coworker about Coffee Cakes by Northern Belles in Bridgeport. Bridgeport, you say? The Buds could walk there (we didn't)! However, we didn't hesitate and put our plan into action.
Coffee Cakes by Northern Belles, located at 306 Main St. in Bridgeport, is co-owned by the mother-daughter duo of Stephanie Belles and her daughter, Morgan. Their business grew from their own home, to the Ohio Valley Farmers' Market and finally to their new location in Bridgeport. The duo offer a variety of products including cupcakes, cakes, jams and jellies, dip mixes, candies, seasonings, cookies and party favors.
The second the Buds walked inside, they knew this was not your standard bakery. Of course there were cases filled with doughnuts and cupcakes, but more impressive was the selection of jams, jellies and dip/seasoning mixes. Morgan, who was working when the Buds stopped by, mentioned that they were a part of the Ohio Valley Farmers' Market and preferred to purchase their ingredients from local sources.
After browsing the selection of baked goods in front of them, Bud Em chose a pair of cupcakes, a powdered doughnut and a cinnamon roll. The powdered doughnut was the perfect morning sweet treat but Bud Em really loved the cupcakes, of which she picked a peach flavor and a chocolate with banana frosting. The tasty peach cupcake actually had a slice of peach in it, and the Buds are suckers for anything featuring the chocolate/banana combination. Yum!
The cupcakes drew Bud Shaunna's attention first, and she immediately satisfied her sweet tooth by selecting a pound cake cupcake with almond icing. In addition, she also picked up a cherry stick pastry, a powdered jelly-filled doughnut and a bag of homemade candied pecans (yum!), all for a little over 6 bucks. Of all her purchases, the pecans and cupcake stood out the most. The cupcake especially was a nice combination of flavors with the buttery pound cake and the nutty hint of almond in the not-too-sweet icing.
While Bud Shaunna was paying for her treats, she also picked up a bag of homemade cookies for her dog. That's right! Coffee Cakes by Northern Belles makes goodies for your furry pal, so you can both indulge a little! There is little objection from Bud Doggy, who devours each treat when she's given one.
Whenever you have a craving for sweet treat, be sure to check out Northern Belles. If you don't have a chance to see them at their permanent location, you can always catch them and their goodies at the Ohio Valley Farmers' Market.
