WHEELING - The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's annual Light the Night Walk was held on Thursday, April 10 at Wheeling Jesuit University. This year, 648 people and 57 teams took part in the event. Donations are still being made, and the total amount raised has exceeded $70,000.
Of the 57 teams that took part, 15 raised more than $1,000, and of the 648 participants, 120 raised more than $100. The top fundraising team at the event was captained by Wheeling Hospital's Rodney Stoner and brought in more than $10,900. The team Reality Check, formed by Times Leader employees and friends in honor of the late Rich "Hoot" Gibson, raised more than $1,770.
All funds raised at the Light the Night Walk directly benefit the patient services programs in the West Virginia/Western PA Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, as well as funding life-saving research. For the period 2012-2013, the patient services program for the local chapter provided services for 150 patients in West Virginia for a total of $295,049.45; 397 patients in Western PA for a total of $875,158.50; and 728 patients who each received a $100 stipend, for a total of $72,800.
