TWO BELLAIRE Police officers and two prisoners were taken to the Ohio Valley Medical Center following a crash along Ohio 7 in Bellaire Tuesday night.
Two Bellaire Police cruisers were also totaled.
According to Bellaire Police Chief Mike Kovalyk, the episode started around 10 p.m as a fight around Franklin Street.
He said Amber Preston and Christopher Bennett were arrested in the fight. First, they were taken to a local hospital to be cleared to be taken to jail.
Kovalyk said that on the way to the hospital and jail, each in a separate car, they were allegedly acting up and being combative.
Preston had to be tased by Officer Mike Wheeler while Bennett was spitting at Lt. John Watson. After Bennett allegedly made death threats towards Lt. Watson and his family, he stopped the car and that is when Wheeler ran into them along the on-ramp to Ohio 7 from 48th Street.
"It is tragic," Kovalyk said. "We've got two cruisers that were totaled, but the main thing is that we don't believe anyone was seriously injured. The Bellaire Police Department will get through this," he said.
A spokesperson at the Belmont County Jail said Bennett, 28, was brought to the jail around 6:30 a.m. today. His address is listed as 508 N. Broadway St., Barnesville. He was booked on a failure to appear warrant and no bond was set.
Preston was not booked into the jail as of 6:45 a.m. today.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol investigated the crash, but a dispatcher said this morning they were not releasing any information.
