In the 1980's, "Save the Whales" became a familiar expression of concern. Now the United States Navy is contemplating training and testing programs that could harm whales and various other marine mammals.
Both explosives and sonar may be employed in these undertakings. The sonar, intended to detect submarines, is known to kill marine wildlife ... Indeed, the European Parliament would accordingly establish a moritorium on the use of high-intensity sonar.
A seemingly reasonable and certainly humane suggestion is that particular habitats should be avoided. Decision-makers should be urged to consider the potential consequences of future training and testing policies.
