STEUBENVILLE - An arrest has been made in the Tuesday evening shooting death of Chad Taravella, 22, of Mingo Junction at the Ridgewood Place Apartments on Two Ridge Road in Wintersville.
Charged Friday with murder and tampering with evidence was Stephen Threats 26, of New Castle, Pa., who is being held without bond in the Jefferson County jail. He is scheduled to be arraigned early next week before Judge Joseph Corabi in the Toronto county court.
Jefferson County Sheriff Fred Abdalla said he is continuing to seek a motive for the shooting and has numerous people to interview in the investigation.
The tampering with evidence charge stems from disposal of the gun after the shooting.
Abdalla, deputies and a Wintersville Police Department K-9 unit on Friday morning searched the area near the Briarwood Apartments, which are near Ridgewood Place. Threats had been staying in an apartment at Briarwood, Abdalla said. The gun was found within 10 minutes by the police dog, behind the apartment where Threats was staying.
Abdalla said the investigation revealed Taravella had been at Ridgewood Place when he was said to have become disorderly Tuesday evening, and jumped out a second-floor window when asked to leave. He was standing outside, talking on a cell phone and swearing, when two men approached him. One of the pair shot Taravella. Investigators have a security tape from the complex.
Taravella had been shot twice and deputies found four shell casings at the scene.
County Prosecutor Jane Hanlin has been working with Abdalla on the case.
Abdalla said it appears the victim and the suspect didn't know each other. He said it doesn't appear there were words exchanged prior to the shooting.
