TRIADELPHIA - Mooey's Frozen Yogurt is the newest business at the Highlands, officially open since May 23. To celebrate, a grand opening has been planned for the weekend of June 20-22.
On Friday at 1:30, a ribbon-cutting will be held with the Wheeling Chamber of Commerce. On Saturday, Mooey's will have face painting and clowns with balloon animals for children. On Sunday, members from the band Hit Play will perform live music. Throughout all three days, there will be t-shirt and frisbee giveaways.
Mooey's is owned by Rodd Welker, a West Liberty University graduate who now lives in Wooster. Welker's wife, Martha, grew up in Wheeling. His sister-in-law, Lisa Sims, manages the business. Sims said Welker had been thinking about opening a business for years, and he liked the idea of frozen yogurt. Self-serve yogurt shops are popular throughout the United States, but haven't quite taken hold in the Ohio Valley yet.

Sims said business has been great so far, even without formal advertising. Mooey's has benefitted from word-of-mouth and social media testimonies from customers. Sims added that many patrons come in for a treat after seeing a movie at the nearby Marquee Cinemas. Mooey's also has already gained regulars, many of whom Sims recognizes by name or face.
Mooey's offers 12 different flavors of yogurt at one time, and the variety changes often. Some yogurts are non-fat or low-fat, while there is always at least one sugar-free and one non-dairy option. Flavors range from rich tastes like chocolate, peanut butter and vanilla to lighter tastes like mango and strawberry. There is also a large selection of toppings, including cold toppings like cheesecake bites, cookie dough, chocolate candies and fresh fruit, and dry toppings like cereals, nuts, and gummies.
Pricing is based on weight; the cost is 45 cents per ounce.
"People seem to really enjoy making their own creations," said Sims. "You can make it as healthy or indulgent as you want with the toppings."
Seating is also a matter of choice. Patrons can sit outside to enjoy good weather or sit indoors at the Mooey's bar or in the atrium at West Liberty's Triadelphia campus. In the future, Mooey's will be offering smoothies, to-go yogurt options and gift cards. They will also constantly be looking for new flavors to bring in.
