ADENA - The 2nd annual Jug Run Ride for a Cure poker run proved a huge success, bringing in $12,600 for the Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center for cancer research. The fundraiser was held Saturday, June 14 at the Adena American Legion Post 525.
The Jug Run Ride for a Cure was created in memory of Frank "Jug" Sawko, who was diagnosed with stage 3 multiple myeloma in September 2007 at the age of 54. His family wanted him to receive the best care and, more importantly, the most advanced treatments available for his type of cancer. The family felt fortunate to find Dr. Don Benson at The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center - Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital and Richard J. Solove Research Institute (OSUCCC - James). Jug received many treatments, including a stem cell transplant, various chemotherapies and immunotherapies and participated in a clinical trial. He lived his life to the fullest and did not let the cancer stop him; however, he lost his battle in January 2013 at the age of 60.
Because of the wonderful care that Jug received at OSUCCC-James, his family wanted to give back. Therefore, 100 percent of the proceeds from the annual poker run are sent to OSUCCC-James. Without research, there is no progress, and no hope for a cure.
