WHEELING Clergy, religious and pastoral care professionals of all denominations are invited to a seminar to address how to provide the special support needed by patients and their loved ones in end-of-life situations.
"Ministering to Those at the End of Life: Calling, Caring and Compassion" will be held July 9 in the Wheeling Hospital auditorium, and continuing education credits will be provided. The seminar is free, but reservations are requested.
The seminar is hosted by Wheeling Hospital and the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston
Pastoral care professionals, clergy and other religious care givers are often called upon to provide spiritual care, emotional support and assistance with end-of-life decision making for the dying and their loved ones. This seminar will offer education designed to help pastoral care givers better address the spiritual and emotional needs of people facing such challenging situations.
Those attending will receive information on common end-of-life conditions and medical terminology, as well as the ethical issues that often arise when discussing end-of-life decision making, especially with regard to life-sustaining medical treatment.
"Medicolegal concerns, such as advance directives, do-not-resuscitate orders and advance medical orders will be discussed," said Dr. Valerie Satkoske, director of Ethics at Wheeling Hospital. "Special attention will be given to the Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Health Care Services, in particular Part Five: Issues in Care for the Seriously Ill and Dying."
The seminar will end with a discussion of communication methods that pastoral care professionals can use to make the dying and their families feel cared for and supported throughout the end-of-life process.
Registration for the seminar begins at 8 a.m. and will include a continental breakfast. Opening remarks will be made from 8:45-9 p.m. and the seminar, with lunch provided, will conclude at 3:30 p.m.
