WHEELING - With vocals compared to Janis Joplin and guitar slinging skills compared to Stevie Ray Vaughan, Carolyn Wonderland will bring her Texas blues to River City as the finale to the Heritage Music Summertime Blues series.
The concert is set for 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 29.
It's because of Wonderland that the Tuesday night Summertime Blues series came to fruition this year.
Carolyn Wonderland brings her Texas blues to River City on July 29.
"I've been trying to book her for Heritage Music BluesFest for the last four years, but unable to get her here because of scheduling conflicts. She was the inspiration for the whole series because I saw she was coming near here in July," said Bruce Wheeler, producer of Heritage Music BluesFest and the Summertime Blues series.
"She doesn't have a whole lot of notoriety, but she's critically acclaimed wherever she goes. She's not your traditional blues artist ... but she's really good at everything she does. She's more diverse and artsy than your typical blues artist," Wheeler said.
Internationally heralded as one of the best vocalists in her adopted hometown of Austin, Texas, Wonderland also has been touted as a guitar goddess.
Along with the guitar and the multitude of other instruments she has learned to play - trumpet, accordion, piano, mandolin and lap steel - Wonderland's ability to whistle remains most unusual. Whistling is a uniquely vocal art seldom invoked in modern music, yet it's among the most spectacular talents the human voice possesses.
On her latest album, "Peace Meal," she brings the hard-won lessons of her own blessed life together with stories from some of the world's best-known and most beloved songwriters to create a musical menu of sustaining, satisfying songs that offers food for thought.
Having seen what loneliness and war can do to the bodies and souls of her fellow men and women, Wonderland is a tireless advocate for the homeless and for peace. "Peace Meal" is her latest testimony to their struggle and her latest call of action and hope.
From classic blues licks to gospel crooning and her famous whistling to peace anthems, Wonderland pulls out all the stops on her latest album.
