WHEELING-Area residents have an opportunity to see the beauty of our city though the eyes of talented artists during Paint Historic Wheeling Aug. 1, 2 and 3.
This three-day painting event brings together dozens of artists from Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania to paint "en plein air" - a French expression for painting "in the open air." Artists will set up their paint boxes and easels throughout the city, capturing Wheeling's charming neighborhoods on canvas.
Paintings created throughout the weekend will be showcased in public exhibitions at Artworks Around Town in Centre Market. Many of the pieces will be for sale. The exhibits take place from 5-7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2 and 2-4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 3 and are free and open to the public. Both exhibits include refreshments including a buffet of Grecian delights on Saturday evening from the Grecian Food Fest.
Paint Historic Wheeling is the ninth annual plein air event to take place the Wheeling area.
"Artists may choose to paint anywhere around the city- Victorian Old Town, the Historic Centre Market District or along the waterfront with beautiful views of the Ohio River and the historic Wheeling Suspension Bridge," said event organizer Liz Neumann. "Wheeling's neighborhoods feature plenty of inspiration from downtown streetscapes to unique architectural structures to rural landscapes, waterways and gardens."
The public can watch the artists at work throughout the city all three days and view completed works at the exhibitions on Saturday and Sunday.
Artists still wishing to participate can register by calling 304-277-1733 or onsite at Artworks Around Town on Friday, Saturday or Sunday at 8:30 a.m.
