DILLONVALE - Is there going to be a strike starting Monday in the Buckeye Local School District by the 85 non-certified personnel working in the district represented by the Ohio Association of Public School Employees, or not?
A vote by district employees found among the non-certified rank and file membership is scheduled for today during a meeting in Yorkville at 4:30 p.m. at the meeting hall of the United Steelworkers Local 1223 on Public Road across from the headquarters of the former R. E. Steel Co.
If all goes well with the union's voting process this afternoon, a successful end of the negotiating and ratification process and dealings will return operations to normal in the school district and all employees will be expected to follow updated and adjusted standard protocol instructions for the start of the school year.
Whether the 2014-15 school year in the Buckeye Local School District will begin with bus drivers, cooks, aides, secretaries, custodians and other non-certified union members walking picket lines outside each school building, or routinely reporting for the first day of work in a new academic year, will be answered by an 11th hour vote slated for late this afternoon.
"If ratified, the union will withdraw its strike notice. If not ratified, the implemented contract shall remain in effect and the union's intent to strike shall remain in effect," Buckeye Local School District Superintendent Mark Miller said when announcing the two sides agreed to consider the positive ground covered Tuesday as representing enough of a shift that both would consider it an agreement they could live with for the next two years.
The OAPSE leadership agreed there had been enough financial improvement seen that it was now willing to put the matter before its membership for an additional vote, and even agreed to already discussed levels of insurance deductibles.
Superintendent Miller confirmed that if the OAPSE personnel vote to accept the tentative agreement reached with the Buckeye Local School District Board of Education on Tuesday, he will be notifying a company he had been in contract to help with providing staffing and security matters that their services will not be required.
However, Miller also made it clear this is the end of the school board's willingness to negotiate on this contract.
Additionally, a decision to implement the threatened strike will bring about the immediate end of any and all benefits for any district employee who chooses not to report to work but to participate in the strike.
