Local products shining for WLU on baseball field

WEST LIBERTY — Ever since he was hired as the head baseball coach at West Liberty, Eric Burkle has wanted to get area products onto the Hilltoppers’ diamond.

He’s succeeding at a high rate this fall. Upwards of half of the 40-man roster that’s played this fall graduated from an OVAC-member school. Many of those are having big impacts, too.

The Hilltoppers wrapped up their fall league schedule Thursday with the decisive game three of the Gold and Black Series.

After each game thus far, the Hilltoppers presented an award to the ‘player of the game’ and twice it’s gone to an area product.

Bridgeport graduate Bailey McGrath earned the award, which is a Chinese Cat named ‘Jinxy’, after a game in which he went four-for-five at the plate with three singles, a home run and five RBIs.

St. Clairsville product Kaden Blomquist, who enjoyed a productive season for the Red Devils last spring, was awarded the trophy following game two of the series.

In other collegiate baseball news, involving area athletes:

NOLAN CLEGG, Ohio State — Toronto product continued his impressive fall campaign during part of the Scarlet and Gray series. He hit a 3-run home run and had a single. All told, he scored twice and drove in three to lift the Gray to a victory. The final game of the Buckeyes’ fall season is tonight at Bill Davis Stadium in Columbus.

Here’s a capsule look at other area athletes:
