Big Red declines invitation to ECOL
STEUBENVILLE — An announcement on Tuesday by Steubenville High School stated that Big Red has declined the formal invitation to become the East Central Ohio League’s 11th member school.
“The East Central Ohio League is disappointed to announce that Steubenville High School’s Athletic Council has declined the ECOL’s invitation to join the league,” ECOL Commissioner John Neighbor said in a memorandum.
Steubenville High School principal Shawn Crosier made the school’s decision official.
“In the best interests of the school, it was decided today at our Athletic Board meeting not to join the ECOL,” he explained.
Steubenville was invited into the league earlier this month by representatives from current member schools. The ECOL has added three new schools this year in Zanesville, Zanesville Rosecrans and Marietta.
According to Neighbor, Big Red will remain an independent.
The ECOL is currently comprised of two five-team divisions, grouped by school size.
The member schools include Cambridge, Dover, Marietta, New Philadelphia and Zanesville in the big school division and Claymont, Coshocton, Meadowbrook, River View and Rosecrans in the small school division.
