Ferry breezes past Buckeye Local
Martins Ferry played a strong first half and cruised through the second half as they posted a 60-39 win over Buckeye Local high atop the Purple City Tuesday night.
It was back and forth in the early going until Jonathan Carlier began raining three’s for the Purple Riders. “Kudos to Jonathan,” said Martins Ferry head coach Jeff Sabatino. “In his first varsity start he hits back to back to back threes. It was the catapult that propelled us through to the win.”
Jeremy Cusick added another bonus bucket from the opposite side of the arc to cap a 12-point run and just like that, Buckeye was in a hole,16-4.
The lopsided scoring continued as Martins Ferry would lead 21-10 at the first buzzer. Cody Schau would mesh three field goals to lead the Riders’ second quarter effort as the hosts would mount a 39-16 lead going into the break.
“The first half we played absolutely lights out in all phases,” Sabatino offered. “I think we might have just coasted a bit in the second.”
“Give Buckeye credit,” Sabatino complimented his opponents. “They are 0 and forever and they came out in the second half and played hard every possession. It is a testament to the kids and the coaching staff.”
Jay Morris returned the compliment, “Coach Sabatino’s teams always execute well.”
“We played with intensity in the second half and scored 23 points,” Morris said as his Panthers would win the second half, 23-21.
The effort, though valiant, would not be sufficient to overcome the first half deficit and the Panthers remain winless at 0-15.
The Purple Riders improve to 5-9 as three players made double figures. Dorsey Moore led the way with a double-double scoring13 points and pulling down 10 rebounds. Jordan Murry and Cody Schau had 12 points and 5 rebounds apiece while Murray recorded 4 assists. The Riders pulled down 33 caroms, committed 16 miscues and were 10 of 14 from the foul line,
Greg Ring paced Buckeye Local with 11 points with 5 rebounds. Landon Brown contributed 7 points and led off the glass with 7 rebounds for the Panthers as they tallied 26 caroms. Logan Mains had 4 assists as Buckeye Local would mesh 5 of 10 penalty shots and commit just 8 turnovers.
The two squads will prepare for Buckeye 8 battles on the hardwood this Friday as Martins Ferry will travel down river to Bellaire while the Panthers will host Indian Creek.
