Union Local hammers Huskies

Whatever Ben Porter told his team at halftime must have worked.

Porter’s Union Local Jets entered the lockerroom on the short end of a 18-17 count against visiting Harrison Central, Tuesday night at Morristown.

“I told the guys they needed to (go back out) and play with more energy,” Porter disclosed. “We didn’t play with much at all in the first half.”

The Jets responded in a big way, connecting for 22 third period points and leaving Justin Clifford’s Huskies far behind in the process.

UL built a 39-28 upperhand after three panels and went on to win going away, finishing off the Cadiz-based quint by 46-32.

“We needed to get mentally tougher and I thought we did that,” Porter added. “Our ball movement was far better (in the second half) and we got some much better looks at the basket.”

While the Jets were soaring to their eighth win in 14 starts, Tuesday’s loss was a total downer for a struggling Huskies’ club which played with reduced enthusiasm after the break.

“You would have thought we were down by 30 (in the lockerroom) at halftime,” Clifford noted. “When you don’t make shots (11-of-39 from the field) and play with so little effort, (this) is the result you end up with.”

Sophomore Jacob Bailey topped UL with a 15-point outing. Bailey knocked down three of the Jets’ eight trifecta connections.

Tyler McGary backed Bailey with eight points. Ethan Tobin and Robert Rutter netted seven points apiece.

Harrison senior Kyle Blanchard produced a game-leading 16 points. Sophomore Nick Pelegreen was next with six tallies.

UL shot 18 of-39 from the field. Rutter ripped down nine rebounds. The winners overcame 12 turnovers.

Harrison Central, falling to 5-10, is scheduled to play Buckeye Local this evening at Connorville. The Jets wing to Richmond for a Friday night tipoff with Edison.

Coach Chad Figurski’s Huskie jayvees were 38-34 victors in Tuesday’s opener.
