Barkcamp Race set for Oct. 1

It’s an annual rite of fall.

Runners and walkers are looking forward to one of the area’s most popular road outings.

The Barkcamp Race returns Saturday, Oct. 1 and will be staged in a new capacity for 2011.

Rod Miller and Cindy Foose, co-founders of the Barkcamp event, and avid trail runners in their own right, announced this year’s race will become part of the XTERRA World Wide Trail Running Series.

What makes the Barkcamp such a unique race is the course’s spectacular surroundings of hills, rocks, roots and stream crossings.

“Where you are able to zone out on the road, you can’t in trail running,” Foose explained.

“Trail running is very different than the road. First of all, you’re out in the woods and enjoying all the sights, sounds, smells and beauty of nature. You also have to have a different mindset.”

The event’s upcoming status in an official running series capacity, figures to enhance the field.

“We are pleased and excited as we anticipate more trail runners joining us this year,” Foose added. “Also, this year, we’re looking forward to an increase of local runners and walkers coming out. It’s all about people getting back to nature and enjoying a refreshing fall afternoon in a great setting.”

The XTERRA Series are both national and worldwide running events. The Barkcamp Race begins the 2012 season for XTERRA in the state of Ohio.

This year’s race also serves as a benefit for both the Debbie Green Memorial and the American Cancer Society.
