Fort Frye ousts St. C.
CAMBRIDGE – There was no breaking news coming out of the Gene Ford Gymnasium Saturday night.
As expected, state-ranked Fort Frye advanced in the Division III Girls Sectional Tournament, pinning a 58-31 setback on upstart St. Clairsville.
Coach Dan Liedtke’s Lady Cadets move on to a Friday night (7:00) co-final scrap against Union Local. St. Clairsville, meanwhile, capped a 5-16 campaign under first-year head coach Alicia Freeman.
“I can’t be disappointed with this loss. We knew what we were up against,” Freeman disclosed. “Fort Frye is a very solid team with a great chance to make a deep tournament run.”
Liedtke, who authored a memorable daily double Saturday, certainly hopes Freeman’s projection comes to pass.
“We were a little flat tonight. But I attribute much of that to the fact we hadn’t played a game in seven days,” he remarked.
“No doubt, we’ll have to be much more sharp (vs. Union Local). They’re a very good team and actually, a lot like us in many ways.”
Fort Frye mounted a 17-8 lead after one panel Saturday then extended the spread to 34-16 at halftime.
“I was pleased with our intensity and defensive effort in the second half,” Freeman stated. “We just didn’t make enough shots and that’s been a problem in many of our games.”
Liedtke received a good night’s work from junior daughter Morgan Liedtke who tallied 15 points and worked the boards for eight rebounds.
Junior Diedre Combs totaled 13 points and seven boards. Reliable Taylor Buchanan netted nine markers and 6-0 senior Sami Hanson hooped eight.
St. Clairsville seniors Alexis Emrisko and Carly Zavatsky both played well in their finales. Emrisko scored nine points with Zavatsky registering six points and 10 rebounds.
“Hopefully, our returning players go to work over the summer and dedicate themselves to improving their games,” Freeman noted.
Liedtke, meanwhile, earlier celebrated an OVAC 3A boys’ title at Ohio University-Eastern before heading west to Guernsey County for Saturday’s sectional conquest.
“Think I’ll go home and get some rest,” he smiled.
