Bridgeport wins first in softball

After a couple of heartbreaking losses, first-year Bridgeport head coach Thomas Joseph said Tuesday following a setback at Martins Ferry, that his team would win Wednesday.

His Bulldogs (1-7) backed their coach’s words with a 5-1 triumph over visiting Barnesville (4-4) on Irene Ehni Memorial Field.

“This feels really good, especially after the tough couple of losses we had earlier this week,” Joseph said. “We talked to the girls about it, and they knew they had given away a couple of games this week with late errors, but tonight we didn’t have an error and that was the huge difference.”

Junior Ashley Hadzima had an arm and bat in the initial victory. She struck out five and didn’t walk a batter in scattering four hits, three of which were doubles.

However, she came up even bigger at the plate when she hooked a drive inside the left field line that rolled all the way into the corner for a two-out grand slam in the bottom of the fifth that snapped a 1-all deadlock. It was her second roundtripper in two days.

Becky Burkhart doubled in the Shamrocks lone run with a fourth-inning double. Marissa Burga and Carly VanFossen also had two-baggers.
