St. C.’s Porterfield Invite set for today
Track and field picks up steam again this evening at St. Clairsville’s Red Devil Stadium and on Saturday at Bellaire’s Nelson Field.
The second annual Porterfield Memorial Invitational gets under way this afternoon with an expanded 12-team field competing.
Last year’s meet, which was won by the St. Clairsville boys and the Meadowbrook girls, featured only eight teams.
Joining the host Red Devils this evening will be: Barnesville, Buckeye Local, Thornville Sheridan, Meadowbrook, Steubenville, River, Tri-Valley, John Glenn, Union Local, Harrison Central and Coshocton.
Along with awards for the top teams and individual placers, the Porterfield Memorial is also honoring the high-point track and field scorers for both boys and girls once again.
However, this year, the awards have been formally named. The high-point track award is named the Sharon Vincent Award. The high-point field award is the named “The Piccollini Sisters Award.”
On the boys’ side, the high-point track award has been named “The Thornburg Family Award” and the high-point field is named the “Jim and Peggy Cook Award.”
Action gets under way at 4 p.m. with the trials and finals in all field events. The first running events of the afternoon hears the sounding of the gun at 5 p.m. That event will be the girls’ 3200 meter run. Following the semifinals in the high hurdles and 100 dash, the final of the girls’ 4×800 relay will be staged. That will preceede the 200 semifinals and lead into the remaining running finals.
In the semifinal heats, the top two of each heat will advance to the finals along with the next best two times regardless of heat.
ON SATURDAY, the annual Bellaire Early Bird will be held at Nelson Field. The traditional field of six schools will take part in the meet, but there’s been a slight change.
Bridgeport will now take part, joining Bellaire, St. C., Barnesville, Martins Ferry and Shadyside.
Action gets under way at 10 a.m. with field events and 11 a.m. for the running semifinals.
