Richetti sparkles for Hilltoppers in victory

WEST LIBERTY Martins Ferry’s Marco Richetti continues to display what makes him one of the top defensive backs in the West Virginia Conferece.

The West Liberty junior led the Hilltoppers’ defense Saturday with 11 tackles, including four resulting in a loss in a 14-13 non-conference triumph against Virginia State.

Both his stat totals were game highs which helped West Liberty hand VSU its first defeat at home in more than two seasons.

The 6-3, 200 pound safety’s biggest play came with Virginia State driving as Richetti picked off a pass in the end zone during a potential scoring drive.

For his efforts, Richetti was named WVIAC Defensive Player of the Week.

Through two games, Richetti is the Hilltoppers’ leading tackler with 18.

As a sophomore, he ranked second on the team with defensive stops, checking in with 71.

Richetti and his teammates will look to go 1-0 in conference play Saturday as W.Va. Wesleyan invades Russek Field for a 1 p.m. kickoff in a WVIAC opener.
