River rolls past Newcomerstown

NEWCOMERSTOWN — Make it a 2-0 start for Mike Flannery and his River Pilots.

After dismantling Fort Frye one week ago in the season opener, the Pilots make a lengthy bus ride to Newcomerstown and achieved similar results.

Overcoming a pair of early turnovers, River rolled to a dominating 35-7 conquest of the Trojans. Next Friday, Flannery’s ball club looks to go 3-0 when the Pilots play at rival Monroe Central.

River produced a relentless running attack at Newcomerstown which generated some 234 yards a result of 42 carries. Workhorse fullback Nick Asturi enjoyed a 145-yard, three-touchdown performance with teammate Jordan Sapp providing able support with 76 yards.

Up top, quarterback Cody Caldwell completed 9-of-16 passes for 182 stripes, including a six-pointer to Cam Brown. Caldwell did yield a pair of interceptions and the Pilots also coughed up one-of-two fumbles.

Midway through the opening panel, Asturi broke off a 12-yard scoring gallop. Accurate sophomore Colton Wright converted the first of five consecutive PATs and it was a 7-0 lighting at 6:05.

River increased the spread to 14-0, three minutes into the second round via Caldwell’s five-yard scoring scamper. Wright was again true at 8:57.

The Pilots tacked on two more third period touchdowns to take control. Asturi’s four-yard blast and Wright’s conversion made it 21-0 with 7:21 remaining in the period.

In the third chapter’s final half-minute, Caldwell and Brown connected on a 56-yard scoring strike. Wright followed for a 28-0.
