Dutton named MAC?Offensive Player of Year
Even though the Kent State women’s soccer team saw its historic season come to an abrupt end Friday night in the Mid-American Conference Tournament semifinals, the post-season awards continue to roll in.
The Golden Flashes dropped a 3-1 decision to top-seeded and homestanding Miami University to finish 13-5-2, including 7-3-1 in the MAC.
However, high-scoring junior Jaclyn Dutton was named the conference’s Offensive Player of the Year after setting several KSU records. She was also a first-team selection.
The forward from St. Clairsville High School, who resides in Blaine, established new single-season marks for points (37) and penalty kicks made (4). She tallied 15 goals and seven assists, including one on the lone goal scored by the Golden Flashes Friday.
“It really hasn’t sunk in yet,” Dutton said of the MAC honor. “People have been coming up to me and congratulating me. it was also nice that we had three girls make second team.”
Sophomore Stephanie Haugh and seniors Sara Henderson and Hannah Newhouse were the second team selections.
“This is the best season that Kent State has had in some time,” Dutton said. “They hadn’t been to the MAC semis since 2004, so we accomplished some good teams goals.”
Kent State has collected 25 victories over the past two seasons, which was the most in a two-year span in school history. The Golden Flashes also re-wrote several team records, including wins (13), winning percentage (.700), goals (40) and assists (44).
Dutton had a lot to do with those new standards.
She still holds the Ohio high school record for most goals scored in a career by a female with 194.
“I feel fortunate to receive all the honors, but I couldn’t have done it without the help of my teammates,” Dutton said while re-directing some of the attention as she always does.
Following her illustrious high school career, Dutton enrolled at Clemson University where she spent her freshman season before transferring closer to home.
