Bridgeport girls remain spotless
Bridgeport remained perfect on the season as it rolled past visiting Bellaire 59-43 in girls’ high school basketball action on Frank Baxter Court inside John J. Havlicek Gymnasium Friday night.
The Lady Bulldogs are now a spotless 9-0 heading into a home contest with Bishop Donahue Thursday. The Lady Reds fall to 4-8..
“We played really well as a team,” said Bridgeport head coach Rob Zitzelsberger. “The layoff hurt us a little at the start. We only had one practice in seven days, but we passed the ball well and moved it around.”
Junior Maclaine Murad continued her stellar play with a game-high 18 points and eight rebounds.
The hosts led 14-5 after eight minutes and 26-17 at the half before blowing the game open with a 22-point third quarter. That increased the lead to 48-26 and basically sealed the deal.
Bellaire did earn a 17-11 advantage in the final stanza to make the final score a little better.
Junior Nicole Smolenak added 14 points, including 10-for-12 from the charity stripe, grabbed eight boards and charted five steals. Freshman dandy Caitlyn Kroll tossed in 13 counters and eight caroms.
Bridgeport led 34-13 off the glass.
Myleah Green paced the Big Reds with a dozen markers. Cari Crozier and Kierstyn Kidder evenly divided 22 points. Kidder had half-a-dozen rebounds.
