Ferry girls, St. C. boys pocket swimming titles

Several area prep swimming teams took part in the third annual Jingle Bell Invitational, which was hosted by Wheeling Central, at Wheeling Jesuit Unviersity’s Alma Grace McDonough Center.

The Martins Ferry girls and St. Clairsville boys left with the top prizes in the team standings.

The Lady Riders finished with 114 points, which was two better than the Lady Red Devils.

The St. C. boys, meanwhile, notched 167 points to run away from Wheeling Central, which closed with 89.

The champion Lady Riders got their first victory in the 500 freestyle thanks to Shelby Poludniak, who won the event by nearly nine full seconds. She touched the wall in a time of 6:29.85.

Ferry’s only other victory came in the event’s final race and the four-point swing lifted the Lady Riders to the title.

The team of Tara Fogle, Tyesha Allen, Shannon Lewis and Poludniak posted a 4:28.77 to edge St. C. in the event and for the meet crown.

The runner-up Lady Red Devils received a victory from Carly Falcone in the 200-yard individual medley. She posted a time of 2:36.51. She later won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:17.57.

Alaina Fasola got into the gold-medal winning act with the victory in the 100 butterfly. She posted a 1:13.07 for the title.

The Lady Devils’ foursome of Fasola, Falcone, Delainey Banks and Falon Weidman posted a 2:14.41 to win the 200-medley relay. The same foursome came back a short time later and posted a 1:57.11 to win the 200 freestyle relay.

East Richland Christian got a strong meet from senior standout Katie Albert, who won the 200 freestyle in a time of 2:14.01. She also won the 100 freestyle in a time of 59.56.

ON THE BOYS’ SIDE, St. C. won six events en route to the top trophy.

Junior standout Michael Eaton continued his impressive campaign with a victory in the 50 freestyle. He posted a 22.93, which was nearly three seconds better than his nearest competitor. He also posted a time of 58.59 to win the 100 freestyle.

The champion Red Devils got their first victory in the 200-yard IM when D.J. Beck touched the wall at 2:39.84.

Dan Kennon got into the victory act for the Devils in the 500 freestyle, posting a 6:03.61.

Quentin Clark won the 100 breaststroke in 1:15.32.

The St. C. squad of Nick Tobin, Clark, Kennon and Eaton posted a 1:43.94 to win the 200 freestyle relay. The same team put the finishing touches on the Red Devils’ title with a victory in the 400 free relay with a time of 4:07.89.

Barnesville senior Christopher Baker recorded a victory in the 200 freestyle. He swam four lengths of the pool in 1:56.97. He also claimed the title in the 100 backstroke, posting a 1:01.27 for the win.
