Monteroso paces St. Clairsville boys; Monroe Central defeats Buckeye Local

Kim Clifford and his St Clairsville Red Devils closed out the 2012 portion of their schedule with a down-to-the-wire victory Friday night at Marietta.

Opposing Division I Upper Arlington in the annual Ohio River Classic at Marietta College, St. C. squeezed out a 66-63 triumph, improving to 4-1 at the holiday break.

St. Clairsville takes a week off before traveling to Cadiz for a Jan. 4 tipoff with rival Harrison Central.

In Friday night’s contest at Marietta, Upper Arlington assumed a 16-12 upperhand after one panel before St. C. retaliated, outpointing the Golden Bears 20-14 during second stanza action for a 32-30 Red Devils’ edge at intermission.

The Franklin County quint came back to forge a 45-45 lockup after three panels, setting the stage for a fourth quarter scoring outburst from St. C. all-Ohioan Dan Monteroso.

The Red Devils’ 6-3 ace accounted for 17 of the Saints’ 21 final frame tallies. All told, Monteroso finished with another sterling performance, knocking down a game-leading 35 markers.

St. C. was a 64-63 leader in the final ticks before Adam Jeffries was sent to the line with the clock showing 0:10. Jeffries twice converted for what proved the final reading. UA was able to launch a potential game-tying three-point attempt just prior to the final horn, a shot that missed the mark as time expired.

Backing Monteroso’s output was veteran Riley Carlton who tossed in a dozen points. Jeffries hit for 10 and senior Dylan Campbell netted nine. Upper Arlington’s Kevin Vannatta topped the Bears with 27 points. Teammate Gabe Akins provided 11-point support.

Monroe Central 70, Buckeye Local 56

In the Meadowbrook Hoop Classic, Scooter Tolzda’s Seminoles led wire-to-wire as Monroe made it six wins in as many outings. The Noles’ were scheduled to oppose host Meadowbrook this evening at 8:00.

Monroe Central raced to a 21-16 lead after one period and maintained 39-32 command at halftime. The Panthers of Jay Morris faced a 54-48 deficit after three quarters.

The Seminoles received a team-leading 24-point output from Korey Lafferre. Also in double digits for the winners were Cameron Jorris (13) and Kordell Antill (12).

Buckeye benefited from a game-high 28-point eruption from senior Kyle Michalo. The Panthers meet Morgan in tonight’s third place contest. Tipoff is at 6:00.

Caldwell 68 Barnesville 64

At Caldwell, the invading Shamrocks saw a nine-point fourth quarter lead evaporate as Caldwell rallied to force overtime before eventually finishing off Chris Pack’s club.

The foes were knotted at 11 following one quarter. The Green edged ahead 28-26 at halftime then extended the spread to 50-41 after three panels before Caldwell used a 18-9 final eight minutes to earn a 59-59 tie after regulation.

Double figure scorers for the Noble County quint included Jonathan Wiechman (20); Tanner Clark (17) and Tanner Baker (10).

Barnesville’s Brandon Burkhart hooped a game-leading 21 tallies and landed 10 rebounds with teammate Zach Houston contributing 15 counters and nine boards.

The loss left Barnesville 4-4 at the holiday break. The Rocks play at Shadyside next Friday.
