Prep Girls Roundup: Barnesville edges Bellaire

Barnesville’s Lady Shamrocks avenged a prior loss at Bellaire by handing the Lady Reds a 62-60 Monday night setback in western Belmont County.

Coach Jamie Carpenter’s club nearly let a 16-point halftime lead slip away before holding on in the final ticks. Seemingly in command and leading by 10 with just over a minute to play, the hosts saw Bellaire strike for eight unanswered points to pull within a bucket.

After Barnesville misfired twice from the line, Bellaire raced down court but saw a last-second three-point attempt fail to drop as Marci Bonar’s quint dropped to 5-13.

Barnesville used an effective press to force numerous turnovers in building the double digit lead. The hosts, however, could not capitalize at the stripe, converting but 18-of-34 attempts.

The winners did exhibit excellent scoring balance with four players finishing in double figures. Lane Hanlon, Raquel Bahmer and Shaela Markovich each netted 12 points while Miranda Plumly provided 10-point support. Marissa Burga netted nine markers.

Bellaire received a game-leading 23-point output from sophomore Kierstyn Kidder who nailed all nine of her free throw attempts. Cari Crozier contributed 10 counters. Aubrey Ryan and Myleah Green tallied nine and eight points, respectively.

Barnesville totaled 29 rebounds with Markovich collecting 10 stray shots. Kidder nabbed nine boards for Bellaire.

Improving to 5-11, Barnesville remains home for a Thursday night tipoff against Caldwell. The Lady Shamrock jayvees were 47-40 winners in Monday’s opener.
