Shadyside boys snap losing skid

After a lackluster performance one night earlier in which he benched his five starters for the entire fourth quarter of a loss to River, veteran Shadyside head coach Ed Andes knew what to expect from his team Saturday night inside the Tigers’ Den.

The Tigers (6-6) were locked in a see-saw battle with visiting Zanesville Bishop Rosecrans (1-11) before pulling away in the final chapter for a 66-56 repeat victory.

“I expected the kids to come and play hard tonight,” Andes said. “And they did.”

Trailing the Bishops, who have now lost six straight, 40-38 after three periods, the hosts built a 45-44 lead before rattling off 12 unanswered counters to seal the deal.

Adam Stupak scored six of his game-high 21 points in the span, while teammate Jared Brooks netted half of his dozen.

“We had to get the game in a full-court game and not half-court,” Andes disclosed. “This small floor suits them (Rosecrans) better, so we couldn’t play the game on half the floor.”

It also helped that Shadyside meshed 11 of 16 free throws in the quarter. The Tigers were 18-for-25 for the game, while the Bishops went 7-for-10.

“This was a good team win for us,” Andes added. “We needed a win.”

Stupak led four double-figure scorers for the Tigers with the aforementioned 21. Hew as backed by sophomore Austin Dorris with 13. Brooks chipped in 12 and Skyler Gibson added 11.

Bishop Rosecrans led 14-12 after one period before watching the Tigers take a 25-24 edge at the half. The visitors also led 40-38 heading into the deciding 8-minute panel.

Despite a height disadvantage, Shadyside held a slim, 32-30, advantage off the glass as Ryan Richardson took game honors with nine. Dorris pulled down seven.

David Cline, a 6-4 banger, led Bishop Rosecrans with 17 points. Tyler Swackhammer had eight caroms.

Shadyside won the JV game, as well.

The Tigers host Bridgeport Tuesday.
