Shadyside holds off UL, 49-47
MORRISTOWN – It’s nice to have shot makers on the court in tight games.
Both Shadyside and Union Local had plenty during their game Thursday evening in ‘The Hangar.’
However, it was the Lady Tigers’ Karli Bonar, who came up big on both ends of the floor, when her team needed it most to help Shadyside post a hard-earned 49-47 victory.
“They’ve got a couple of seasoned players and we knew that coming in,” said Union Local head coach Drew Greenwood. “I am not pleased with our composure at given times. I think we’ve put adequate time in addressing this. We’ve got to lean on those players more.”
Shadyside did exactly what Greenwood wanted his players to do. The Lady Tigers leaned on Bonar, who delivered time and time again, finishing with 25 points, including 10 of her team’s 12 in the final chapter.
“She senses when we need her to make plays,” Yates said. “She’s capable of taking over the game.”
The Lady Tigers (11-7) looked to be in command when they headed to the half with a 30-19 lead. However, Union Local (13-5), which celebrated senior night, came out with a different resolve in the third quarter.
The Lady Jets embarked on a 17-2 run that was fueled by their talented trio of Kayla Doty, Cori Medley and Dallas Montag. That group combined for 16 of the 19 points UL registered in the third. Ali DeLaney also hit a big triple in the spurt.
“We just loosened up in the third quarter and started playing,” Greenwood said. “We’re just looking to get the confidence back that we’d been playing with. It was nothing special, but we needed to dig a little deeper to get that energy we’d played with at other times during the season.”
A Doty goal early in the fourth made it 42-40, but Bonar dialed long distance on the next two trips from WNBA range, putting the visitors up, 46-42.
Doty buried a triple of her own, cutting the deficit to one, but UL was able to get no closer. Hayley Holenka and Bonar hit foul shots to preserve the outcome.
Bonar also came up big on the defensive end with two blocked shots. She also gathered five rebounds. Holenka finished with 13 points to back Bonar.
Sophomore Kenzie Fielding scored only four points, but she grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds.
Though the Lady Tigers came out on top, Yates found plenty that her team needed to work on in the next 24 hours before it welcomes 5A-leading University for a Saturday matinee.
“I think, as a team, this was probably our worst defensive outing,” Yates said. “But, give Union Local credit because they hit shots even when we challenged, but we weren’t mentally focused on the defensive end at times.”
Union Local was led by Doty, who had 19 points. Medley finished with 16 and nine rebounds and Montag added eight.
It was a well-played game on both ends. Union Local had only nine turnovers, which was four more than the winners.
Union Local earned a split on the evening thanks to a victory in the reserve game.
