Martins Ferry girls advance; Bellaire girls are eliminated

Martins Ferry and Fort Frye advanced in Division III Girls’ Sectional play Saturday night at Cambridge.

The Lady Riders ousted Steubenville Central, 45-28, while Fort Frye sidetracked Bellaire, 75-22. Ferry and Fort Frye will do battle Thursday (7 p.m.) with the survivor moving on to district play.

FERRY came off a 12-10 upperhand after one period to surge ahead 25-17 at halftime. The Lady Purple took a 31-20 spread to the fourth pane.

Jess Kinney topped Ferry and all scorers with a 17-point outing. Kinney also collected six rebounds. Meagan Rose netted eight points. Tyrah King brought down nine boards for the winners. Shaina Oberdick nabbed seven stray shots. Morgan Stalder grabbed four boards, distributed two assists and recorded two steals.

BELLAIRE ran into a buzzsaw against state-rated Fort Frye.

The Lady Cadets raced to 18-5 command after one period then pitched a second period shutout while tallying 19 markers for 37-5 intermission leadership.

Taylor Buchanan (19) and Diedre Combs (15) combined for 34 Cadet points.

Cari Crozier and Kierstyn Kidder scored six points apiece for Bellaire.
