St. C.’s Eaton wins 100 free at sectional

St. Clairsville’s Michael Eaton fashioned a first place performance in his specialty – the 100-yard freestyle – during Saturday’s OHSAA Eastern District Sectional Swimming competition contested at Steubenville High’s aquatic facility.

Eaton posted a 50.11 finals time to nip runnerup Jesse Toney of Dover. As a result, the Red Devils’ veteran automatically advances to district action next weekend. Remainder of district qualifiers was to be determined by times posted Saturday and were scheduled to be made official today. A complete district preview will be featured in this week’s Times Leader.

Eaton produced a runner-up effort in the 100-yard breaststroke, clocking in at 1:00.41 to finish just short of Dover’s Jake Armstrong whose victorious winning time was 1:00.16.

Barnesville’s Christopher Baker produced a pair of second place efforts. The Shamrocks’ senior clocked in at 5:11.23 in the 500-yard freestyle and hit the wall in 2:10.01 in the 200-yard individual medley. Baker was runnerup to River View’s Coleston Pope in both events.

On the girls’ side, St. Clairsville’s Carly Falcone was runnerup in the 200-yard individual medley with a 2:32.14 clocking. Falcone also placed fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke after clocking in at 1:17.11. The Lady Devils’ Alaina Fasola was fifth in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:09.76.

Martins Ferry freshman Tara Fogle placed second in the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 1:07.12. Fogle was fourth in the 200-yard individual medley, clocked in 2:35.22.

Also excelling was East Richland Christian’s Katie Albert, a third place finisher in the 100-yard freestyle in 58.97. Albert took fourth in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:09.82.

Two St. C. girls’ relay teams produced third place finishes. In the 200-yard medley relay, Delainey Banks, Carly Falcone, Alaina Fasola and Hanna Vera teamed for a 2:08.13 clocking.

The Lady Devils’ 200-yard freestyle relay was also third. Fasola, Vera, Banks and Falcone posted a time of 1:53.64.

Martins Ferry’s girls placed fourth in two relay events. The team of Shelby Poludniak, Shannon Lewis, Tara Fogle and Tyesha Allen teamed for a 2:08.46 in the 200-yard medley event.

The Purple’s 400-yard freestyle relay unit consisting of Fogle, Allen, Christina Lattimer and Poludniak was clocked in 4:14.53.

Barnesville’s Lady Shamrocks placed fifth in the 200-yard freestyle relay. The team of Carolyn Blattler, Myka Gordon, Gabby Fulst and Olivia Jones clocked in at 1:54.92.

St. Clairsville’s boys twice placed third in relay events. Nick Tobin, DJ Beck, Quentin Clark and Dan Kennon were times in 3:49.09 in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

In the 200-yard freestyle relay, Michael Eaton, Clark, Tobin and Kennon teamed for a 1:39.43 clocking.

In overall team scoring, Dover’s Tornadoes sets the pace in both boys and girls’ competition. The Ferry girls were a solid third with St. Clairsville fifth and Barnesville 10th.

The Red Devil boys totaled 148 points for seventh place. Ferry was 14th, tallying 50 points. Barnesville was 16th and Bellaire 18th.
