Ten area matmen in today’s Division III district semifinals

PHILO — Martins Ferry and Shadyside qualified three grapplers apiece for semifinal round action as the Division III District Wrestling Tournament opened Friday afternoon at Philo High, south of Zanesville.

Along with the Purple Riders and Tigers, St. Clairsville has two competitors in the semis. Monroe Central and River, meanwhile, qualified one wrestler for semifinal action.

Ferry’s Damon Outward (126); Zac Coole (220) and Theo Zoumpolidis (106) each earned two Friday triumphs as did the Tigers; terrific trio of Chase Kinemond (160), Alex Quinn (152) and Ian Baker (145).

Red Devils’ achieving two Friday victories included heavyweight Corey Ernest and 113-pound Alex Timko. Monroe Central’s Rodney Richter and River’s 220-pound Joseph Dotson also prevailed twice.

Zoumpolidis takes a 25-11 mark into his semifinal match against Heath’s 39-11 Isaac Young. Outward, improving to a stellar 43-5, opposes Zane Trace’s Josh Wilson and his 36-11 ledger. Coole, now an excellent 41-7, faces off against Harvest Prep’s 25-7 Tony Peoples.

At 160, the now 36-2 Kinemond, has a semifinal encounter with Rob Mickey (41-7) of Northridge, The Bengals’ unbeaten Quinn (39-0) has drawn Amanda Clearcreek’s 34-7 Caleb Horn. At 145, the Orange’s 40-2 Baker squares off with Northmor’s 42-4 Jamie Baldridge.

Red Devils’ heavyweight Ernest improved to 38-3 following two opening round triumphs. Ernest has a semifinal engagement with Bishop Ready’s 36-1 Patrick Garren. Timko, meanwhile, is 28-13 and matched with Newark Catholic’s 32-3 Caleb Ohl.

The Seminoles’ Richter, at 19-2, faces Hartley’s 31-7 Kristopher Hill. River’s Dotson, sporting a 33-5 ledger opposes West Jefferson’s Corey Ginn and his 47-3 ledger.

Seven other qualifiers earned opening round decisions before falling in the championship quarters. They will await opponents today in consolation round matches.

Barnesville’s Collin Wilson (106) and Howie Howiler (120) will be vying in addition to the Monroe Central duo of Chase Carothers (132) and Zac Potts (152).

Also looking to advance are Ferry’s Bryce Coleman (138); St. C.’s Seth Benge (170) and Beallsville’s Bruce Sefert (145.

A dozen additional district qualifiers sustained opening round setbacks Friday and are vying this morning in consolation round bouts: Shadyside’s Wyatt Skapik (106); Brett Kahl (138) and Zach Meadows (285); St. Clairsville’s Justin Callarik (138), Dalton Nolte (160), and Michael Furbee (220); River’s Kole Smith (160) and Brett Rosen (195); Martins Ferry’s Jon Bodkin (285); Union Local’s Zac Sowers (132); Bellaire’s Nick Maffe (152); and Barnesille’s Taylor Griffin (132).

Amanda-Clearcreek sets the overall team pace with 67.5 points. Northridge is runnerup at 36.5. Ferry is a solid third with 33 markers and Shadyside right behind at 31.5. West Jefferson (30.5) rounds out the top five.
