OVAC vs. MAC in Clash of Champions wrestling match
Prep wrestling season might have officially ended last weekend with the Ohio State Championship Tournament in Columbus.
However, 14 of the premier seniors in the OVAC will get their chance to put on a singlet once again Monday evening.
The 18th annual “Clash of Champions” pitting the best of the OVAC against the best of the Pennsylvania Midwestern Athletic Conference will be held Monday at 7 p.m. at West Allegheny High School in Imperial.
The wrestlers and coaches on both teams will be honored and recognized this evening with a banquet at Undo’s in Weirton. It gets under way at 6 p.m.
The OVAC chooses its team based on the Ron Mauck OVAC Tournament that was held in January. The top senior finisher is invited and if he turns down the opportunity, it goes to the next highest finisher.
Steubenville leads the OVAC with five of its wrestlers on the squad. Taking part are Anthony Craig (126), Anthony Parada (132), Jacob McKitrick (138), Charlie Keenan (195) and Greg Moray (220).
Shadyside’s trio of senior standouts will also make the little more than hour trip to Imperial Monday. Ian Baker, state champion Alex Quinn and Chase Kinemond will take part at 145, 152 and 160, respectively.
St. Clairsville’s Corey Ernest earned the spot at 285 by virtue of his OVAC title a few months ago.
The balance of the OVAC squad includes: Wheeling Park’s Tyson Lira (106), South’s Lance Hill (113), Meadowbrook’s Jared Patterson (120), Beaver Local’s Daniel Lattanzio (170), Brooke’s Skippy Scurry (182) and Caldwell’s Jared Leasure (182).
The OVAC squad is being coached by Shadyside’s Scott Kinemond, River’s Eric Rosen, Steubenville’s Mike Blackburn and South’s Chris Hill. All led their teams to championships in the OVAC Tourney.
The OVAC holds a commanding 12-5 edge overall in the series and has won six of the last seven, including last year’s 41-24 victory at Wheeling Park High School.
