Linsly routs Bridgeport
BROOKSIDE – Bridgeport would go toe-to-toe with Linsly for four innings but unravel in the late going as the Cadets rolled out to a 10-3 final tally on Niekro Diamond at Bill Jobko Stadium Monday evening.
“We had a lot of young kids who stepped up and played really well for us tonight,” said Jay Cartwright head coach of the Linsly School. “We kind of got off to a slow start but overall it was a good outing.”
Linsly junior hurler Arien Seymour had a rocky start in the opening frame as he gave up two hits and issued a walk. Bailey McGrath opened with a single, Jonathan Kreiter drew the free pass and Cody Reed notched an RBI single to tie the contest at one run apiece.
Seymour settled in after that retiring the next four Bulldogs on strike outs, striking out the side in the second frame on his way to 11 Ks total. Allowing just one hit off the bat of Kreiter in the next four innings. The only other base runner was McGrath who reached on an error in the fifth. The Cadet’s left-hander fanned the other three Bulldogs he faced in the frame to strand that runner.
Despite the final tally, McGrath was having a good outing on the mound in the early going for Bridgeport. After issuing an opening triple off the bat of Seymour, the sophomore allowed just two more hits until the fifth inning when the Cadets took advantage of miscues by the Bulldogs to plate three.
Linsly added five more runs in the top of the sixth to take a 10-1 lead.
The Bulldogs came back to load the bases with no outs in the bottom of the frame but Cartwright made the call for Colton Coss who walked in a run before striking out the next batter and getting out of the jam on a deep fly ball.
“You have to make the routine plays to beat good teams, to beat any team,” Bulldogs’ coach Ted Downing stated “We were not making the catches, fielding the balls, we were not hitting the ball, we gave up 8 unearned runs total.”
QJ Williams would single in the bottom of the seventh but that was all for the Bulldogs as they could not overcome the deficit and fall to 11-3.
The Cadets improve to 12-1 and will travel to Weirton before welcoming the Bulldogs to their campus Wednesday. The Bulldogs will try and get back on track as they host Bellaire this afternoon.
