Prep Softball Roundup: St. John stays perfect; Barnesville prevails
St. John’s Lady Irish received another prime time mound outing from Hannah Absalom to record a 1-0 Wednesday afternoon victory at Magnolia.
Absalom compiled some 16 strikeouts and issued three walks to best Magnolia’s Mallory Chapman who fanned six and did not issue a base on balls.
Absalom chased home the game’s only run with a third inning single as the Fighting Irish overcame a rare off day at the plate.
The victory moves Coach Jerry Magistro’s team to a perfect 10-0 on the season while Big Blue falls to 4-9.
Magnolia’s best chance came in the bottom of the same frame when Chapman reached on a one-out bloop single over third, the Eagles’ only hit of the game, and Audrey Gibb worked a walk on a 3-2 pitch to put a pair on. Ashley Moore’s sacrifice bunt moved the runners to second and third before Absalom recorded her second strikeout of the inning to keep the game scoreless.
The Irish then went to work on manufacturing the games only run in the top of the third. Number 9 hitter Kyleigh Falcone reached on an infield single, went to second on a Kaydie Coppa fielder’s choice and third on a wild pitch. Absalom then aided her own cause with a one-out blooper to right that sent Falcone home with the eventual game-winner.
Barnesville 5, Bridgeport 2
AT Barnesville, the Lady Shamrocks’ Paige Gibbons stopped Bridgeport on two hits. She recorded seven strikeouts and one walk. Bridgeport’s Ashley Hadzima fanned six and walked one.
Bridgeport’s Dakota Dobrzynski drilled a two-run double. Barnesville’s Lane Hanlon hammered a two-run single in the bottom of the sixth. Gibbons contributed a single and run batted in. Marissa Burga belted a triple.
Indian Creek 9, Union Local 4
AT Morristown, invading Creek batted around and scored six times in the top of the first en route to a victory at Union Local.
Bethany Davis accounted for three Redskin runs, drilling a double and single. UL’s Ali Delaney tripled and singled for a run batted in. Olivia Minamyer socked two singles. Haley Cole singled and knocked in one.
Edison 5, St. Clairsville 4
AT Jefferson State Park, St. Clairsville had the tying run on third base in the top of the fifth when a rainstorm halted play, allowing the Lady Cats to prevail.
Zoe Westfall was the winning pitcher, striking out four and allowing two walks. St. C.’s Lauren Figura fanned two and walked one.
Figura singled twice and drove in two runs. Alicia Avila doubled home a pair. Carlee Gillespie rapped a single and double. Krista Morrison contributed two singles.
Edison’s Cassidy Jarvis singled and doubled, plating three teammates.
Shadyside 4, Monroe Central 2
AT Woodsfield, Shadyside’s Meagan Heagney fired a complete game four-hitter, totaling nine strikeouts and no walks. Monroe’s Megan Dick recorded four Ks and two walks.
Kenzie Fielding cracked a double and triple for the Lady Tigers. Shelby Benedetta collected two singles.
Monroe’s Erin Miller drilled a double. The Lady Seminoles were scheduled to host Caldwell this afternoon while Shadyside had a scheduled road game against Bishop Donahue at the 470-field complex.
