Purple Riders ground Jets
MORRISTOWN – Martins Ferry’s Purple Riders were still stinging from their first loss of the season Wednesday night and got off the bus ready to right the ship. Ferry would score four runs on five first inning hits to set the tone as they got back in the win column with a 6-2 victory over host Union Local.
“I told them we took a hard loss yesterday, it was Buckeye Local and it was cold,” said Martins Ferry head coach Paige Williams. “The weather really took it to us yesterday and we wanted to come out today ready to play.”
Martins Ferry senior Kylie Stalder started the uprising with a one-out double. Tyrah King singled aboard to set the plate for Cassie Hanson. Hanson was the first of a trio of Purple Riders to hit an RBI single with an 0-2 count.
Hanson plated Kylie Stalder, Brooklyn Monroe plated King and little sister Morgan Stalder sent both Hanson and Monore home with her twin RBIs on the mono-bagger.
The Jets left two stranded in the bottom of the frame and both teams went in order in the next two innings.
Kady Webb singled aboard to start the fourth for Ferry and Justine Schell ripped a fly ball to the fence for a triple which allowed Webb to take a leisurely stroll across the dish.
Union Local was in a 6-0 hole but got an assist from the Purple as Shayna McGary reached on an error. McGary was erased on a fielder’s choice leaving Brittany Stack at first base. Freshman Ali Delaney earned an RBI pushing the first run across for the Jets.
“Give credit to Ferry, they made the plays to kill our rallies,” said Jets’ skipper Roger Herbert. “Our Achilles heel now is starting too late.”
Union Local would add one more in the fifth as pitcher Ali Bethel notched a single and worked her way around the diamond. Bethel would strike out two Purple batters while issuing no walks.
Freshman Shaye DeLeonardis earned the win for Martins Ferry whiffing six Jets and also issuing no free passes.
Martins Ferry improves to 3-1 and hosts Edison tonight while Union Local (3-3) is at St. Clairsville.
