St. Clairsville nips Wheeling Central
It’s been a tough season for Tom Sliva and his St. Clairsville baseball team as far as wins go.
However, the host Red Devils (4-10) picked up a tight 2-1 victory over invading Wheeling Central Tuesday afternoon at Memorial Park.
St. Clairsville took the lead on a solo home run by junior Joel Giffin in the bottom of the sixth.
Freshman Brandon Carrothers earned the mound victory with a complete-game effort. He fanned five and walked three.
The Red Devils trek to Connorville to meet Buckeye Local this afternoon.

At Connorville, Chase Hopkins scattered three singles as the Panthers (8-8) moved into contention for an OVAC Class 4A playoff berth with their blanking of the visiting Monarchs (9-11).
Today is the cut-off date for the semifinals, which begin Saturday at the higher seed’s home field.
The lefthander fanned three and walked two. In addition, he helped himself at the plate with a solo homer to deep right leading off the bottom of the fifth inning.
Austin Marshall stroked a run-scoring triple in the first frame that chased home Shane Duncan, who had singled. Marshall would then score on an error.
Buckeye Local hosts St. Clairsville today.
Martins Ferry 6, Barnesville 0
At Barnesville, Michael Oberdick tossed a 5-hit shutout with nine strikeouts and four walks as the Purple Riders (8-9) kept their OVAC Class 4A playoff hopes afloat.
Tyler Strama slugged a 2-run triple and Robert Vargo added a 2-run double for Martins Ferry.
Austin Hannahs fanned nine in a losing effort for the Shamrocks. David Brown singled twice.
The Purple Riders host Harrison Central today.
Bridgeport 15, Beallsville 5, 6 inn.
At Brookside, the Bulldogs (13-5) bounced back from a tough loss to Shadyside 24 hours earlier to run-rule the visiting Blue Devils (3-12) on Niekro Diamond at Bill Jobko Stadium.
The hosts tallied nine times in the bottom of the first en route to the blowout win, which more than likely clinched them a OVAC Class 2A playoff berth.
Bailey McGrath (2 singles, double, RBI), QJ Williams (3 singles, RBI) and Jonathan Kreiter (2 singles, double) combined for nine hits and two RBI for the winners. Bradley Pritchett singled twice and knocked in a run, while Andrew Hadzima drove in a run with a pair of base raps.
Pritchett struck out five before giving way to Colt Charlton, who fanned three.
John Dietrich singled, doubled and drove in a run for Beallsville, which has now lost 12 in a row. Logan Nippert and Jeremy Brown had RBI singles.
Bridgeport hosts Buckeye Trail today. Beallsville entertains Caldwell.
Wheeling Park 8, Union Local 4
At Wheeling, the Patriots (19-2) continued their solid play by tallying seven times in the bottom of the fourth inning to erase a 2-1 deficit against the visiting Jets (4-13).
Justin Riley drove in a run with a single and double for UL. Matt Dunfee doubled in a run, while Griffey Girty had a two-bagger.
Union Local travels to Richmond today to meet Edison.

At Wellsburg, the Cadets (17-2) received two RBI each from Colton Coss, Jameson Murray, Arien Seymour and Dom Ellis in outslugging the host Bruins (3-15).
