Prep Softball Roundup: Absalom, SJC no hit Trail; SCC tops HC
Only a leadoff walk in the third inning kept Hannah Absalom from another perfect game.
The St. John Central junior struck out 12 in tossing her sixth no-hitter of the season in a 10-0 whitewashing of visiting Buckeye Trail on Amanda’s Field Monday afternoon.
Absalom walked Alexis Burris to start the Warriors’ third inning, but she was gunned trying to steal second by Irish catcher Cheyenne Harris as Absalom faced the minimum 15 hitters in recording her gem.
She also helped her own cause at the plate by slugging a double and triple to account for three RBI. Morgan DeLuca launched a 3-run homer, while Sydney Helms doubled in a run and Kaydie Coppa singled in another.
The Irish (21-3) are idle until Thursday when they travel to Toronto.
Steubenville Catholic 4, Harrison Central 3
At Steubenville, the Crusaders (19-4) got the better of the visiting Huskies (15-7) in a matchup of the top two seeds in the upcoming Division III sectional tournament.
Steubenville Catholic is the second seed behind Harrison Central.
Katie Parkinson drove in a run for the Huskies with a single. Shianne Nameth singled twice. Kara Dunfee and Roni Caldwell had doubles.
Winning pitcher Alex McComb singled twice to produce a run. Ashlyn Daley had a single and sacrifice fly to plate two runs. Fran Capaldi had a run-scoring base rap.
St. Clairsville 13, Steubenville 10, 9 inn.
At Franciscan University, the Red Devils (10-11) scored three times in the top of the ninth inning to outslug the host Big Red.
Alicia Avila and Summer Gallentine stroked RBI singles in the outburst, while the final run crossed on a wild pitch.
St. Clairsville blasted 20 base hits. Carlee Gillespie (3 singles, double, RBI), Lauren Figura (3 singles, double, RBI) and Krista Morrison (single, 2 doubles, home run, RBI) paced the winners’ attack.
Winning pitcher Michaela Miller added three runs batted in on a single and double. Mackenzie Otto slapped a run-scoring double and JoLyn Shunk doubled twice.
Fort Frye 7, Monroe Central 0
At Woodsfield, Victoria Mimken fanned 13 in firing a 3-hitter at the homestanding Seminoles (6-15).
Hanna Majors doubled the the hosts.
The Cadets remained undefeated.
