SJC, Shadyside grab softball wins
TORONTO – St. John Central made its next to last tuneup before the post-season a quality one here Thursday afternoon with a convincing, 14-2, triumph over Toronto in softball action.
Hannah Absalom struck out 10, walked one and allowed five hits in pitching the Irish (22-3) to the victory. She also doubled.
Morgan DeLuca paced St. John Central’s 14-hit attack with a trio of one-base raps. Kaydie Coppa singled and doubled, while Sydney Helms and Cheyenne Harris evenly divided four singles. Caitlin Sliva doubled.
The Irish face Frontier Saturday in the opener of a quadrupleheader in Division VI sectional tournament action at the Mead Township Park Complex in Shadyside. That game will begin at 1 p.m.
Shadyside 4, Buckeye Local 1
At Shadyside, the Tigers (15-7) defeated the Panthers (14-11) for the second time in three days as Megan Heagney struck out nine, didn’t walk a batter and permitted just five hits.
Angelina McKeever doubled twice to drive in two runs for the winners. Lindsey Dunn singled and doubled, while Heagney doubled in a run. Kenzie Fielding and Sarah Dierkes added runs batted in.
Rachel Hoagland slugged a solo homer in the second for Buckeye Local’s lone tally. Aliyah Marelli singled and doubled. Kaylee Decesare singled twice.
Shadyside meets Beallsville Saturday at 4:15 p.m. in D-IV sectional tournament play. Buckeye Local hosts Bellaire Saturday before meeting Edison Monday in D-II sectional action at State Lake Park in Richmond at 5 p.m.
Indian Creek 2, Harrison Central 0
At Wintersville, the host Redskins (16-3) earned the Buckeye 8 title with their shutout of the visiting Huskies (16-8).
Paige Geanangel twirled a 2-hitter and struck out 10 for Indian Creek.
Shianne Nameth doubled for one of Harrison Central’s two hits. Kara Dunfee had the other.
Katie Ellzy whiffed seven and didn’t walk a batter. She allowed five hits.
The Huskies open D-III sectional action Monday at 5 p.m. against Union Local at the St. C. Junior Sports Complex.
