Off-road racing returns

ST. CLAIRSVILLE – Powerline Park will play host to the sixth stop on the American Woods Racing Championship Series on July 27-28.

The AWRCS has a local connection as 1985 Buckeye South graduate Amy (Milhoan) Stiller and her husband are the owners of the series.

“My husband was a racer and he’s always loved the sport,” Amy Stiller said in a telephone interview from their motorsports dealership in Kittaning, Pa. “When the opportunity to purchase the series came about, he jumped on it.”

AWRCS is similar to the GNCC series that races at Powerline Park in the fall. Stiller said it includes ATVs dirt bikes and UTVs, which are side-by-side machines.

“There will be more than 500 racers competing in 10-12 different classes each day,” she continued. “Powerline Park is a very well-known track across the United States. It’s a real favorite of riders because of its mud holes and hills.

“It’s also a good draw for racers from the tri-state area,” she added. “There will be more than 1,000 people here that weekend.”

This will be the second year that the Stiller’s have brought their series to the Ohio Valley. However, my is hoping for a much smoother go at things this year.

“We were here last year during Jamboree In The Hills and trying to find lodging for everyone was a nightmare,” she admitted. “We had to use rooms in Wheeling.”

She said their AWRCS has a staff of 20 people that travel to the various sites.

The event gets under way Saturday, July 27 at 9 a.m. with ATV races and continues with UTVs throughout the day. Sunday’s action begin at 8 a.m. as dirt bikes take to the 10-12 mile course which winds through the hills of Western Belmont County.

“There is more than racing,” Stiller noted. “We do a ton of give-a-ways. We’ve also done a Breast Cancer Awareness Race, as well as a Back to School Race.”

There is also a ‘Buddy Race.’

“If someone can’t endure the entire race, they can split it with a buddy,” Amy Stiller explained. “That’s become pretty popular with some of the older racers.”
