W.Va. coaching staff set for OVAC game
Last weekend, the complete rosters for the 68th annual Rudy Mumley OVAC All-Star Charity Football Classic were announced.
West Virginia head coach Mike Young has announced his coaching staff for the game, which is slated for Sunday, July 28 at Wheeling Island Stadium.
“We’ve got a quality group of coaches and even better people,” Young said. “They’re a very loyal group of guys. There are times when we have our differences, but when we come out of the coaches’ room, we’re all on the same page. We’re fortunate to have a veteran staff that believes in what we’re doing.”
Here’s a capsule look at the West Virginia staff:
MIKE YOUNG, Head Coach – This veteran head coach has been strolling the sidelines for 41 years, including the past 16 at his alma mater.
As the Maroon Knights’ head coach, Young has guided the program to Class A state championships in 2005, 06, 07, 2010 and 2011. All told, he owns a 139-61 record.
Prior to serving as head coach at Central, Young served as head coach at St. Clairsville. He guided the Red Devils to a 52-41 record during his tenure, including a trip to the playoffs in 1989 and a pair of OVAC titles.
Young was named Dapper Dan Man of the Year in 2007, Big 22 Coach of the Year twice, received the prestigious OVAC Coach of the Year honor in 2012 and has been a finalist three other times.
Mike, who also serves as the Central athletic director, and his wife Carol have three sons, John, Jason, Justin and a daughter, Whitney. The couple also has two grandchildren.
JAMIE BORDAS, defensive coordinator – This long-time assistant has become a key cog on the Maroon Knights’ staff since joining 11 years ago.
Prior to arriving at Central, Bordas served as the head coach at Bishop Donahue for one season. He’s been a part of seven state titles during his years with the Knights.
Bordas, who graduated from Wheeling Park and then earned both his under graduate and law degree from Notre Dame University, was also featured in an NFL Films segment about coaching Interhall Football at N.D.
Jamie and his wife Stacey (Contraguerro) have four children, Alexis, Jay, Luke and Matt.
JASON RINE, offensive coordinator – This veteran play caller has been coaching at his alma mater for 19 years.
All told, this upcoming season will mark Rine’s 22nd year in coaching. He also has a season of experience at Brooke and Wheeling Park before landing with the Knights.
Rine has been on the coaching staff of all of eight state title-winning teams, including as offensive coordinator for the last five.
Jason and his wife Heather have three sons, Isaac (14), Jacob (11) and Levi (4).
DEVAUGHN GORDON, running backs and linebackers – This relative newcomer to the Maroon Knights’ staff will be entering his second season with the Knights.
Gordon was a mainstay for the Knights during his playing days. He took part in the 2009 Mumley Classic as a player.
Currently, Gordon is pursuing a degree in exercise physiology degree at West Liberty University.
EDDIE ANDERSON, offensive and defensive line coach – This veteran assistant has been working under Young for seven seasons.
Anderson has been a football coach for 12 years total.
Anderson is a 1992 graduate of Wheeling Park where he played football, wrestled and ran track. After graduation, he attended West Liberty.
Eddie and his wife Richele have two children, Peyton (11) and Braxton (9).
SHANNON KUCHINSKI, defensive backs and receivers – This former Steubenville Central standout has been on board with the Maroon Knights for seven seasons.
Kuchinski was a player on the Crusaders’ 1993 Division V State Title team.
Kuchinski earned a degree from Wheeling Jesuit University.
Shannon and his wife Kelly have two children, Kendall and Easton.
JIM WOLFE, offensive and defensive line – This long-time assistant has been coaching football for 40 years and has spent the last 30 working for the Knights.
Wolfe has state title rings from 2000, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2010 and 2011.
Wolfe and his wife Joyce have one son Dr. Matthew Hartzell.
