Inaugural Shadyside Invite set for Saturday

SHADYSIDE – The inaugural Shadyside Cross Country Invitational is set to host an eight-team field Saturday morning.

It’s not only the first time that Tiger Town has hosted an invite, but it’s believed to be the first time it’s hosted a cross country meet of any kind.

“We’re looking forward to hosting this,” said Shadyside head coach and meet director Stu Rynkievich. “We’re excited to stay close to home and show off our facilities and we think the course will be challenging.”

Rynkievich designed the 3.1 mile course, which he called “extremely fan friendly.”

The start and finish line will be on Fleming Field. The race will begin at the south end of the field and head out the north gate under the scoreboard and run around Leona Middle School, onto the Tigers’ baseball field and then into Hillview Park.

Both the mile and two-mile markers are inside the park and the course contains only road crossings, meaning the majority of the race will be on grass.

“It’s going to be a hilly course,” Rynkievich said.

“We’re expecting slower times than maybe what some of the kids are accustomed to.”

The Shadyside meet was actually on people’s schedules for the 2012 season, but Rynkievich and his staff of volunteers just weren’t ready to proceed and ended up cancelling the meet.

The action will begin at 9 a.m. with the junior high girls and that’ll be followed by the junior high boys.

After an elementary kids race, the two varsity races are slated to begin at approximately 10:45 a.m. with the girls, which will be followed by the boys’ race.

Slated to join the host Tigers are Bellaire, Buckeye Local, River, Indian Creek, Harrison Central, Barnesville and Linsly.
