Obecny second in W.Va. Amateur

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. (AP) – Hurricane’s Sam O’Dell shot a 2-under-par 68 for a two-stroke lead after the first round of the West Virginia Amateur.

O’Dell made seven birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey at the Old White TPC Course in White Sulphur Springs. O’Dell finished second at the West Virginia Open in June.

Wheeling’s Thadd Obecny shot even-par 70 on Monday and is alone in second place. Three others are a stroke back at 1-over. The tournament concludes Thursday.

Attention on the tournament also is on who’s not playing.

Defending champion Pat Carter isn’t competing this year due to a family commitment.

And three-time champion Tim Fisher was disqualified Monday for playing the wrong ball on the 12th hole. Fisher was returning from a three-year suspension from West Virginia Golf Association events.
