St. Clairsville’s Otto chosen for Queen of Diamonds Showcase
ST. CLAIRSVILLE – Like a student moving to a new school district, Mackenzi Otto arrived at St. Clairsville a bit nervous as to what to expect.
After being welcomed from Fredericktown with open arms, it didn’t take the softball standout long to make an impression on her new Lady Red Devil teammates on the diamond.
“Last season was the best season of softball I’ve had yet,” Otto said.
“Moving to a new school means meeting a whole new team, and I couldn’t have asked for better coaches and my teammates were very welcoming.”
Otto, who became St. C.’s every day first baseman, helped lead the Lady Devils to the Division III Eastern District Championship Game with a .293 batting average.
“The St. Clairsville program is wonderful, and it has helped me to reach out to many new opportunities, including this showcase,” Otto said.
Since the prep season ended, Otto spent much of her summer playing travel ball and will get another chance to showcase her skills on the softball field.
Otto is one of 264 players embarking on Winthrop University in South Carolina this weekend for the seventh annual Queen of Diamonds Showcase.
“(Being chosen for the showcase) is such an incredible opportunity,” Otto said. “I hope to improve on my skills, learn more about recruiting options and maybe catch the eye of a few coaches.”
At the showcase, Otto plans on working as a first baseman and she’s anxious to see how the progress she feels she’s made at the plate pays off.
“Softball is such a big part of my life and knowing this showcase could help me continue my career at the college level is great,” Otto said.
