Union Local avenges earlier loss by toppling Barnesville
MORRISTOWN – Union Local evened the season series with Barnesville in a four set, 25-22, 25-14, 10-25 and 25-14, victory in volleyball Monday night.
Earlier in the season, the Shmarocks posted a three set victory over the Jets but Barnesville head coach. Nikki McEndree cautioned her team not to expect an easy game.
“When we played them at home we won each game by just two points. I told them this week that when we came here it would be a different story,” McEndreee said.
The initial set was a battle with the Jets coming out to take a 10-5 lead but the ‘Rocks rallied back to within a single point 22-21 before the hosts finished out the win with a three-point run.
The second set was all Union Local as it ran out to a 10-point lead as the Shamrocks struggled with serve-return.
“We played horrible tonight,” said a frustrated McEndree. “Give credit to Union Local, they came ready to play.”
The win was much needed for the Lady Jets, who are now 4-6 on the season.
“It feels nice to get that game back,” Jets head coach Karl Penz said. “We needed that to get some confidence.
“We moved around our rotation and put in a new setter,” Penz explained. “The move has given us more opportunities at the net and in turn the other setter has time to relax and gain confidence.”
Senior Anna Jo Nardo was credited with 13 assists for the Jets along with 5 serving aces. Devin Earliwine covered the backcourt digging up 11. Up front, Kaitlynn Clark-Patterson dominated the net with 11 kills and 10 blocks. Mikayla Patton blasted eight deadly spikes while Shayna McGary defended the net with seven blocks for the Jets now 4-6.
Junior Miranda Plumly paced the Shamrocks with 12 kills, two blocks and 8 digs. Sydney Ralston served up 14 points adding five kills and three digs.
Shasta Roberts added nine points, five kills, five digs and one block. Junior setter Layna Broomhall helped out with 10 assists, five digs, nine points and one kill. Paige Huntsman chipped in with 12 assists, six digs, four kills, one block while senior libero Paige Wright dug up 13 back court shots for Barnesville.
The Shamrocks fall to 7-3 and will travel to Bridgeport while the Jets host Martins Ferry this evening.
