Union Local tops Panthers

MORRISTOWN – It was senior night at Union Local High School and the Jets wanted to get a win for their lone fourth year player Anna Jo Nardo. It would take four matches to achieve their goal but in the end the Jets prevailed 25-19, 19-25, 25-18 and 25-20.

“It has been a tough season,” Jets head coach Karl Penz admitted. “This was probably the best game we have played as a team.”

“We were talking, covering for each other and we covered the floor well, even the corners,” Penz said the corners have been a problem all season for his young Jet squad. “Tonight, we did a great job.”

Buckeye Local was never really out of contention in any of the matches and head coach Janelle Windsheimer acknowledged the effort by her panthers, “We came up short, but I thought all the girls were on the same page tonight, we had great team work.”

“I am proud of our girls,” said Windsheimer. “They fought right to the end.”

It was a pair of Morgans pacing the Panthers at the net as Fedorko and Staten both had 5 kills. Staten added 13 digs and served up 5 aces. Becky Zeroski dug up 18, Lexus Fedorko dug up 9, set 5 assists led the back court service with 12 points and 4 aces.

Mikayla Patton stood tall at the net for the Jets notching 12 kills, Madie Schafer dug up 12, Katie Bashline set 16 assists while Cortney Otto blocked 7 at the net for Union Local.

The Jets improve to 6-10 and will travel to Martins Ferry on Monday. Buckeye Local falls to 2-11 and will host St. Clairsville Tuesday.
