Bridgeport girls improve to 12-0

COLUMBUS – Bridgeport remained perfect in a dozen tries here late Saturday night in girls’ high school basketball action.

The Division IV Lady Bulldogs held off Division I Columbus Westland by a 41-39 count to earn a clean sweep of their two-game trip. They had defeated Delaware Hayes Friday night.

Maclaine Murad scored a game-high 13 points to pace Bridgeport. Caitlin Kroll added a dozen and Nicole Smolenak nine.

The Bulldogs meshed 11 of 12 free throws.

Bridgeport led 9-8 after one quarter and 25-18 at the half. Westland made a game of it by outscoring the Belmont County squad 11-5 in the third to make it 30-29 Bridgeport with eight minutes. The Bulldogs earned a 11-10 advantage in the final quarter to seal the deal.

Rob Zitzelsberger’s team is idle until Monday, Jan. 6 when it travels to Steubenville Central.

River 62, St. Clairsville 50

At Hannibal, Jensen Caretti broke loose for 30 points and Landyn Ramsay added 19 at the Pilots (7-4) cruised by the visiting Red Devils (6-4) Saturday inside R.L. Potts Gymnasium.

Haylee Bowers chipped in nine markers for the winners.

Alexis St. Clair had 13 points to lead St. C. Anna DeFillipo added 11 and Brigee Mick 10. Lauren Figura registered nine.


Bridgeport 57, Madonna 55

At Bridgeport, QJ Williams scored 19 points and J.C. Cash added 13 as the Bulldogs overcame a 2-point second quarter in rallying past the visiting Blue Dons Saturday night inside the John J. Havlicek Gymnasium on Frank Baxter Court.

Bridgeport (6-2) trailed 21-18 at the half before erupting for 21 third-quatter lightings.

Parker Dyson added seven points to the Bridgeport cause. Bailey McGrath, Cody Seevers and Bailey Sieber each had six.
