Buckeye Local girls win first

CONNORVILLE – Lauren Swiger scored a game-high 21 points and Becky Zeroski added 16 as homestanding Buckeye Local finally broke into the win column in girls’ high school basketball action.

Behind the aforementioned duo, the Panthers (1-7) defeated Bellaire, 61-52, in Buckeye 8 action.

It was also the first head coaching victory for Buckeye Local’s Tom Figurski.

“It feels really good,” he said. “The girls have worked really hard. We’re starting to come around.”

Buckeye Local trailed by three at the half, 26-23, but used a 13-9 scoring edge in the third quarter to take the lead. The Panthers outscored the Big Reds (5-7) by a 25-17 margin in the final period.

Cari Crozier led Bellaire with 13 points. Kierstyn Kidder and Mary Garloch each had 10.

Buckeye Local visits Harrison Central Monday. Bellaire hosts Martins Ferry the same night.

Frontier 64, Shadyside 38

At Shadyside, the Cougars (7-3) ran out to a 17-9 advantage after one quarter and never looked back in rolling past the injury-riddled Tigers (1-8).

Jonna Eneix paced Shadyside with 12 points.
